Ask two buyers for a “premium hoodie,” and you will get two different garments.

One arrives thin and floppy. The other stands up on its own and feels like it cost three times as much. Same cotton, same color, same factory, sometimes even the same pattern.

The difference is almost always GSM fabric weight. It is the single most useful number on a knit spec and the one most often left blank, guessed at, or copied from a competitor without anyone checking what it actually means.

This guide fixes that.

Chapter 01

What GSM actually measures (and what it doesn’t)

GSM stands for grams per square meter. It is exactly what it says: take one square meter of a fabric, put it on a scale, and read the weight in grams.

A fabric at 180 GSM means one square meter of it weighs 180 grams. A 400 GSM fleece means that same square meter weighs 400 grams.

That is the whole definition. No conversion tricks, no hidden variables. It is a measure of how much material is packed into a given area; in plain terms, how heavy and dense the fabric is.

Lower GSM is lighter and thinner. Higher GSM is heavier and denser.

How it is measured on the floor

Nobody actually cuts a full square meter. The industry uses a GSM round cutter, a circular blade that punches out a disc of exactly 100 cm², or one one-hundredth of a square meter.

You weigh that disc on a precision scale and multiply by 100. Weigh 3.8 grams, and you have a 380-GSM fabric.

For the number to be reliable, the fabric should be conditioned first and left to settle in a standard room temperature and humidity because cotton soaks up moisture from the air, and a damp swatch reads heavier than a dry one.

A reputable mill or a manufacturer with its own quality lab does this as routine. It is also why a GSM “checked” with a kitchen scale and a guessed-at off-cut should never be trusted on a bulk order.

The conversion you’ll meet: US suppliers often quote weight in ounces per square yard (oz/yd²) instead of GSM. One oz/yd² ≈ 33.9 GSM. So a “7 oz” tee is roughly 237 GSM, and a “4.5 oz” tee is about 153 GSM. To go from ounces to GSM, multiply by 34; to go the other way, divide.

What GSM does NOT tell you?

Here is where most sourcing mistakes start. GSM measures weight, not thickness, and not quality. They usually move together, but not always.

  • A dense, tightly knit fabric can weigh the same as a loose, fluffy one while feeling completely different in the hand.
  • Fiber matters. A polyester-heavy fabric and a 100% cotton fabric at the same GSM will not feel, breathe, or drape the same way. Synthetic fibers are lighter per volume, so a poly blend can look “thick” at a lower GSM.
  • Construction matters. Single jersey, French terry, interlock, and brushed fleece behave differently even at identical weights.
  • Yarn quality matters. A 240 GSM tee in cheap open-end yarn and a 240 GSM tee in combed ring-spun cotton share a number and almost nothing else.

So treat GSM as the headline figure, not the full story. It is the fastest way to communicate roughly how substantial a fabric is but it always sits alongside fiber, construction, and yarn on a proper spec.

Why we condition before we weigh

In our cut-and-sew unit, every incoming fabric roll is checked against the order’s target GSM before a single panel is cut. Swatches sit in the QC room to acclimatize, then go under the round cutter and scale. A roll that lands outside the agreed tolerance is flagged before it reaches the cutting table because a 20 GSM drift across a 500-piece run is the difference between the hoodie a buyer approved and one they will reject.

Weight ranges by product: tees, hoodies & fleece

There is no universal “good” GSM. The right weight depends entirely on the product and the use case. Below are the working ranges we sample against, with what each one actually feels like when you pick it up.

The market consensus from current sourcing and streetwear sources lands in the same place: around 160–180 GSM is the safe universal choice for a mixed program, while 220–260 GSM is the zone where a tee starts reading as premium streetwear.

Hoodies & sweatshirts

Sweat fabrics are heavier than jersey because of how they are built usually French terry or fleece, with an extra layer of looped or brushed yarn on the inside. So hoodie GSM ranges sit well above tee ranges.

Understanding the fleece itself

Two hoodies at the same GSM can feel different because the construction differs. The three you will meet most:

  • French terry (loopback). A smooth face with soft loops on the inside, left unbrushed. Breathable, with a clean drape, it’s the year-round favorite for streetwear because it feels premium without being hot.
  • Brushed fleece. The inside loops are brushed into a soft, fuzzy nap. Warmer and cosier, with a fuller hand. This is the classic “sweatshirt” interior. At the same GSM, it tends to feel thicker and warmer than French terry.
  • Loopback / heavyweight terry. Heavier loopback constructions push into the 350–450+ GSM zone and give that structured, stands-on-its-own feel buyers associate with high-end labels.

This is why “400 GSM hoodie” is an incomplete brief. A 400 GSM brushed fleece and a 400 GSM French terry are two different products. Always pair the weight with the construction. (For the full breakdown of materials, see our fiber composition guide.)

Quick rule of thumb

If a buyer can’t tell you a number, ask them what the garment should feel like.

“Light summer tee” → 140–160.

“Solid everyday tee” → 170–190.

“Premium boxy streetwear tee” → 220–260.

“Standard hoodie” → 300–340.

“Heavyweight statement hoodie” → 380–450.

You can spec accurately from feel, words alone.

Chapter 03

How GSM drives drape, durability, warmth & price

Weight is not a vanity number. It changes four things buyers care about, plus a few they forget about until the complaints come in.

1. Drape & silhouette

This is the most visible effect. Lighter fabric falls close to the body and flows.

Heavier fabric has the structure to stand away from it.

That boxy, architectural silhouette every streetwear brand is chasing right now is not just pattern cutting; it is fabric weight doing the work.

A heavier tee holds its shape and drapes cleanly without clinging, which is exactly why oversized fits are built on high-GSM cloth. Spec too light for an oversized block, and the garment collapses into a shapeless drape.

2. Durability & shape retention

More material, all else equal, means more to wear through.

Heavier knits resist thinning, hold their shape through repeated washes, and are less likely to go thin or “wavy” at the hems and cuffs.

For a brand, this is reputation: a heavyweight piece that survives 100 washes without sagging protects the premium image its price promised.

Lightweight fabric isn’t “worse”; it’s just doing a different job, but for everyday staples meant to last, weight buys longevity.

3. Warmth

Heavier fabric traps more air, so it insulates more, which is why hoodie GSM tracks so closely with season.

A brushed interior adds to this further. The flip side: weight you want in January is weight you don’t want in July.

A 260 GSM tee feels luxurious in autumn and stifling in summer heat. Match weight to the climate the garment will actually be worn in, not just to the aesthetic.

4. Opacity & print

Thin fabric goes see-through, especially in light colors; it’s the fastest way to make a garment feel cheap.

Higher GSM is more opaque and gives a flatter, denser surface for decoration.

Heavier cotton absorbs ink more evenly, so prints come out sharper and last longer, with less cracking and bleeding over time.

For brands doing screen print, DTG, puff, or embroidery, a denser fabric is a more forgiving canvas.

5. Price the one everyone underestimates

Knit fabric is bought and sold by weight. So GSM is, very directly, a cost lever.

Push a tee from 180 to 240 GSM, and you are buying roughly a third more cotton for every single unit.

Take a hoodie from 280 to 420 GSM, and you are using around 50% more fabric per piece.

That extra material flows straight into the unit price before you have added a single design detail.

And it doesn’t stop at the cloth. Heavier fabric:

  • Costs more to ship; freight is largely a function of weight, and a carton of 450 GSM hoodies weighs far more than the same carton of 300 GSM ones.
  • Can be slower and harder to sew: thick seams need the right needles and machine settings, and dense fabric runs slower through the line.
  • Paired with premium yarns, the heavyweight look usually demands combed ring-spun cotton to stay soft at high density, which is itself dearer than basic yarn.

The takeaway: every 10–20 GSM you add is a real cost decision, not a free upgrade. The skill in sourcing is spending that weight where the customer will feel it in the hand, the drape, and the durability, and not paying for grams that do nothing for the product.

The “premium heavyweight” trend and its real cost

For most of the last decade, the market chased thinner and softer. That has flipped. “Heavyweight” is now a selling point printed on the product page, and weight has become shorthand for quality in the buyer’s mind.

Where the trend came from

The shift tracks the rise of elevated streetwear and a wider move away from fast fashion.

As shoppers grew tired of thin, see-through tees that died after a few washes, influential labels set a standard where a thicker tee signals a more premium product.

Pick up a high-end brand’s tee, feel how solid it is next to a fast-fashion version, and the weight does the talking before you have even checked the price.

The numbers behind the demand are real. Manufacturers serving the streetwear segment report a steep rise in orders for heavy-GSM tees in the 220–300 GSM band over the past couple of years.

Premium T-shirt programs that buyers now treat as “high-end casual” routinely sit in the 250–280 GSM range.

Why heavier reads as premium

  • Structure. High-GSM fabric holds the boxy, drop-shoulder silhouette that defines the current look.
  • Hand feel. Density gives a “plush,” substantial feel that the brain instantly registers as expensive.
  • Longevity. Heavier cotton survives more washes without sagging or cracking, a value the customer can feel over time.
  • Photography. A structured, weighty garment simply photographs better, which lifts conversion on a product page.

The cost reality nobody puts on the product page

Heavyweight is a genuine quality upgrade, but it is not free, and treating it as a default rather than a decision is how margins disappear. The real costs:

  • Materials. 30–50% more cotton per garment versus a standard weight, often in pricier combed ring-spun yarn.
  • Freight. Heavier cartons mean higher shipping costs per unit, which is meaningful on international bulk orders.
  • MOQ economics. Premium heavyweight knits in specific constructions can carry higher minimums at the mill, which can squeeze smaller brands.
  • Production. Thicker seams and denser fabric can slow the line and demand tighter machine setup.

“Heavyweight” is a spec, not an adjective

The most expensive mistake we see is a brand asking for a “heavyweight hoodie” without a number, approving a sample, then querying the price. When we cost a 300 GSM French terry hoodie against a 420 GSM one in the same combed cotton, the fabric bill alone moves sharply before stitching, finishing, or freight. Our advice to every buyer is the same: pick the weight deliberately, put it on the tech pack, and control the cost instead of discovering it.

The sweet spot for most premium-but-sellable programs? A structured tee around 230–250 GSM and a hoodie around 350–400 GSM are heavy enough to feel premium, not so heavy that price or warmth becomes a problem.

Chapter 05

How to spec GSM in your tech pack

A weight number on its own is half a spec. Here is how to write it so a factory can hit it the first time, with no back-and-forth and no nasty surprises at the sample stage.

1. State the target GSM with a tolerance

Knitting is not laser-cutting. Fabric weight naturally varies a little roll to roll, so a single fixed number is unrealistic. Give a target plus a tolerance, for example, 320 GSM ±5%. This tells the mill the acceptable band and gives your QC team a clear pass/fail line. No tolerance, and “320” becomes an argument.

2. Specify finished weight, not greige

This trips up more orders than any other point. Fabric weight changes through dyeing, washing, and finishing; a fabric can gain or lose GSM after processing. Always state whether your number is the finished (post-wash) weight or the raw greige weight. For almost all buyers, what matters is the weight of the fabric in the garment they receive, so spec the finished GSM and say so explicitly.

3. Pair GSM with construction and fiber

As covered earlier, the same number behaves differently across constructions. A complete weight line reads like the following:

“100% combed ring-spun cotton, French terry (loopback), 340 GSM ±5%, finished weight.”

That single line removes almost all ambiguity. Add yarn count (e.g., 20s/2) and knit gauge if your product is technical, but fiber + construction + weight + tolerance + finished/greige is the core.

4. Define how it will be measured

State that GSM is to be verified on a conditioned sample using a standard round cutter and calibrated scale. This sounds obvious, but agreeing the method up front prevents the classic dispute where a buyer’s reading and a factory’s reading disagree because one swatch was damp and one was dry.

5. Common mistakes to avoid

  • Copying a competitor’s number blind. Their “350 GSM” might be greige, a different construction, or a different fiber. The number alone tells you very little.
  • Chasing weight at the cost of feel. A super-heavy fabric in poor yarn feels stiff and cheap. Weight without yarn quality is a downgrade dressed up as an upgrade.
  • Ignoring the climate. A beautiful 280 GSM tee is unsellable in a hot market. Spec for where it will be worn.
  • Leaving GSM blank. “Make it nice and thick” is not a spec. If you don’t set the number, the factory will, and you’ve handed away control of feel, cost, and consistency.

The one-line test: if your fabric spec doesn’t contain a weight, a tolerance, a construction, a fiber, and a finished-vs.-greige note, it isn’t finished. Get those five things on the page and your samples will land far closer, far faster.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on use. For summer or athletic wear, 120–160 GSM keeps things light and breathable. For an everyday, all-round tee, 160–185 GSM is the safest, most versatile choice. For premium or streetwear tees with a structured, boxy feel, aim for 220–260 GSM. If you’re unsure and need one number for a mixed order, 170–180 GSM is the most forgiving default.

Most hoodies labelled “heavyweight” sit between roughly 350 and 450 GSM. Below that around 280–350 GSM is the standard midweight zone that suits the broadest seasonal demand. Above 450 GSM you move into ultra-heavyweight, near-outerwear territory used for boutique and vintage-style pieces. Remember to pair the number with the construction: a 400 GSM brushed fleece feels warmer and fuller than a 400 GSM French terry.

No. GSM measures weight, not quality. A heavy fabric in cheap, coarse yarn can feel stiff and worse than a lighter fabric in fine combed cotton. Weight contributes to a premium feel, but yarn quality, knit construction, and finishing matter just as much. Treat GSM as one important signal among several, not a quality score on its own.

Multiply ounces per square yard by about 33.9 to get GSM. So a 7 oz tee is roughly 237 GSM, a 6 oz tee about 203 GSM, and a 4.5 oz tee around 153 GSM. To go from grams back to ounces, divide by 33.9. US suppliers tend to quote ounces; most of the rest of the world quotes GSM. They’re measuring the same thing.

Knit fabric is sold by weight, so a heavier garment simply uses more cotton per piece often 30–50% more when moving from a standard to a heavyweight construction. On top of the material, heavier fabric costs more to ship, can be slower to sew, and usually pairs with pricier combed ring-spun yarn to stay soft at high density. The weight you add is a real cost, which is why it should be a deliberate decision on the tech pack.

Specify finished (post-wash) weight, and say so explicitly. Fabric weight shifts during dyeing, washing, and finishing, so the greige (raw) number won’t match the fabric in the final garment. Since what you actually receive is the finished fabric, that’s the number to put on the spec along with a tolerance such as ±5%.
