Sounds like it should have one answer. It doesn’t.
Screen printing built the industry, but it needs setup screens and real minimums, which is painful when you are testing designs in small drops.
So most new founders land on the two digital methods instead:
DTG (direct-to-garment) and DTF (direct-to-film).
Both are digital. Both skip the screens.
Both let you order small. And that is exactly why they get confused for each other.
They are not the same.
One prints into the fabric.
The other prints a layer onto it.
That single difference decides the feel, the fabrics you can use, how the print survives the wash, and where each one quietly wins or loses on cost.

The Fabric-First Rule:
Start from the garment, not the artwork.
Fabric is the one hard gate in this decision.
DTG needs cotton to work well.
DTF doesn’t care. So decide the fabric first, and half the time the print method is already decided for you.
Everything below feeds this rule.
Once fabric narrows the field, feel and cost break the tie.
How each method works, in plain terms:
You don’t need to run a printer to choose one.
But you do need to know what is physically happening to the ink because that is where every difference comes from.
DTG
Direct-to-Garment:
A specialized inkjet printer sprays ink straight onto the shirt.
Think of it as a very good inkjet printer built for fabric.
The garment is loaded flat, the printer sprays water-based ink directly onto it, and the ink soaks into the fibers.
On dark garments, a pre-treatment liquid is applied first so the ink bonds and the colors hold. Then the print is heat-cured to set it.
Because the ink lives inside the fabric, there is nothing sitting on top.
The design becomes part of the shirt.

DTF
Direct-to-Film:
The design is printed on film, then heat-pressed onto the garment.
DTF is a two-step process.
First, the design is printed onto a sheet of PET film.A hot-melt adhesive powder is dusted over the wet ink and melted so it sticks to the back of the print.
That gives you a finished transfer. Then a heat press bonds that transfer onto the garment in seconds.
Because you are pressing a ready-made transfer onto the surface, the garment underneath barely matters, which is the whole point.

That is the entire difference in one line: DTG puts ink in the fabric; DTF puts a printed layer on the fabric.

One practical knock-on for you as a founder: DTF transfers can be printed ahead of time and stored.
DTG has to be printed onto each garment on the spot.
That shows up later in the cost and turnaround section, so park it for now.

Color, detail, and hand-feel compared:
This is where founders make gut decisions and where a wrong guess shows up in returns.
The two methods produce genuinely different-looking, different-feeling garments.
Hand-feel: the difference customers notice first
Hand-feel is the texture when someone runs a hand across the print.
It is the single most important thing on a premium tee, and the two methods sit at opposite ends.
DTG feels like almost nothing.
The ink soaks into the cotton, so the print is soft, breathable, and barely raised.
On a good cotton tee, it feels like the design is part of the shirt. That is exactly the feel high-end fashion and basics brands are paying for.
DTF sits on top.
A fresh transfer feels like a thin, smooth layer, a little raised, sometimes slightly plastic on first touch, most noticeable across big solid blocks of color.
It softens after a few washes, and modern films are far more flexible than early ones.
But it will never fully disappear into the fabric the way DTG does.
Neither is “worse.” A slightly raised, tough print is a feature on a workwear-style graphic and a flaw on a minimalist premium tee. Match it to what you are selling.
Color and vibrancy:
DTF is louder. Because the print sits on the surface with a solid white base under it, colors read bright and high-contrast, like a sharp decal on the garment. This gap is widest on dark garments, where DTF pops and holds saturation with no fuss.
DTG is softer and more natural. The ink absorbs into the fibers, so colors look a touch more muted and blended into the fabric.
On white and light cotton, that looks premium. On dark cotton, DTG needs a heavier white under-base and pre-treatment to compete, and it still tends to read gentler than DTF.
So, do you want a graphic that shouts off a black hoodie? DTF.
Want artwork that melts into a natural-white tee? DTG.
Detail and gradients:
Both handle full-color art and fine detail well:
This is where digital beats screen printing outright. Two small edges are worth knowing.
DTG is exceptional at smooth gradients and photorealistic art on cotton because the ink blends into the surface.
Painterly, soft, photographic designs are its home turf.
DTF holds crisp fine lines and small text extremely sharply because the print is laid onto film first, and it reproduces dense multi-color designs without breaking a sweat.
Founder tip: feel and color are impossible to judge from a screen.
Before you commit a whole drop to one method, order the same design printed both ways on your actual garment and wash it a few times.
A sample costs you a garment. A wrong 300-piece run costs you the drop.
Fabric compatibility and durability:
This is the section that applies the Fabric-First Rule.
Get this right, and most of your decisions are already made.
Fabric compatibility: the hard gate
DTG is a cotton specialist. Its water-based ink is designed to soak into and bond with natural fibers.
On 100% cotton and high-cotton blends, it shines.
On polyester, nylon, and heavy-synthetic blends, the ink struggles to grip; you get patchy adhesion and washed-out color, and it often won’t survive laundering.
Some pre-treatments claim to make DTG work on poly, but results are hit-or-miss and not something to build a product line on.
DTF is fabric-agnostic. Because it presses a sealed transfer onto the surface, it works on cotton, polyester, blends, fleece, nylon, and even non-apparel like tote bags and other heat-pressable goods.
No pretreatment is needed, dark or light.
For a founder running a mixed catalog, that flexibility is the headline feature.
This is the fabric-first rule in action: if your garment isn’t mostly cotton, the decision is essentially made DTF.
If it is cotton, both are on the table, and feel and cost break the tie.
Durability: how it survives the wash
Your customer will judge the print after ten washes, not on day one.
Both methods are durable when applied and cured correctly, but they fail in different ways.
DTG won’t peel, but it can fade. The ink is in the fabric, so there is no layer to lift off.
Over many washes, colors can gradually soften as the fabric itself ages; the print’s life is tied to the shirt’s life.
Its durability hinges heavily on process: get the pre-treatment or the cure temperature wrong, and a DTG print can wash out fast.
Done properly, it holds up well.
DTF is tough but can crack if abused. The powder-adhesive bond and sealed surface layer resist fading and shrug off friction, which is why many shops rate DTF as the more consistently durable of the two.
The trade-off is its layered nature: repeated hot washes can weaken the adhesive over time and lead to minor cracking or peeling.
In practice, both land in roughly the same window on the order of 50 to 100 washes when done right.
The failure mode differs: DTG fades; DTF can crack. Neither is fragile.
Put this on your care label: cold wash inside out; no tumble dry.
It meaningfully extends both prints; it stops DTF’s adhesive from being cooked and slows DTG’s fade.
It costs you nothing and cuts “the print died” complaints.

Cost and quantity break points:
This is where a small brand protects its margin.
The right method changes depending on how many pieces, how many designs, and what fabric, not on a single headline price.
First, the good news that applies to both: they are digital, so there is no screen-setup fee and no heavy minimum.
That is the entire reason a new brand reaches for either over-screen printing. You can test a design in tens of pieces, not hundreds.
Where is DTG efficient?
For a small run of cotton pieces, DTG is clean and fast.
The design prints straight onto the garment in a few minutes with almost no setup, so single pieces and tiny batches are genuinely economical.
It also uses relatively little ink.
This is why print-on-demand cotton tees and lean-toward DTG one-offs are its strength.
The catch: DTG doesn’t get dramatically cheaper per piece as volume climbs, because each garment still takes roughly the same time to print.
It scales linearly, not steeply.
Where is DTF efficient?
DTF wins on volume, mixed fabrics, and heavy color.
The clever part is the gang sheet: you fit many designs (or many copies) onto one film sheet, print them together, then press each transfer onto a garment in seconds.
That batching is where DTF’s cost per piece drops as you scale, and it lets you mix designs and fabrics in one production run.
DTF does use more white ink, especially for vibrant prints on dark garments.
Factor that in. But for full-color art, dark or synthetic garments, and larger orders, it is usually the more cost-effective route.
Turnaround, quickly:
For a single garment, DTG is faster and done.
For a bigger order, DTF can be faster overall because you print all the transfers up front, and then each garment is a seconds-long press.
That pre-printing also means DTF transfers can be stocked ahead of a drop; DTG can’t be.

Which to choose, by use case:
Run the Fabric-First Rule, then match your situation to the closest case below. Most founders land cleanly.
Step 1: Fabric.
Step 2: Feel or spread.
Step 1: Is the garment mostly cotton? If no (polyester, nylon, fleece, or blends), choose DTF and stop; the decision is made.
Step 2: If yes, both work, so ask what matters more: the softest possible hand feel and gradient art (→ DTG) or maximum vibrancy on darks, one method across many products, and top durability (→ DTF).

On a cotton garment where you genuinely can’t decide, the tie-breaker is almost always hand-feel.
