Picking a zip style sounds simple. It isn’t.

A half-zip and a full-zip look like cousins.

Under the hood, they are built differently, cost differently, and sell to different people.

If you choose wrong, you pay for it. You buy the wrong hardware.

You brief your factory wrong. You launch a piece your audience doesn’t want.

This is the definitive guide to that choice.

It is written for brands selling a collection, not for sewists.

By the end you will know exactly which zip style fits your product, your budget, and your first production run.

Chapter 01

What Actually Separates a Half-Zip From a Full-Zip?

Start with the one thing that drives everything else: how far the zip travels.

That single fact changes the build, the hardware, the cost, and the use case.

Get this clear first. The rest of the guide follows from it.

A half-zip opens the neck, not the body:

A half-zip zips from the collar down to roughly the middle of the chest. Then it stops.

The garment never splits in two. You pull it on over your head. It is a pullover with a vent at the top.

You will also hear “quarter-zip.” That is the same idea with a shorter zip, ending higher on the chest.

Half and quarter sit in the same family.

They behave the same way in production.

We treat them together here and call out the difference only where it matters.

A full zip opens the entire front:

A full zip runs from the collar or hood all the way to the hem.

When you unzip it, the two front halves come fully apart.

You put it on like a jacket, one arm at a time. You never pull it over your head.

The three differences that flow from this:

The opening length is the root. Three practical differences grow out of it.

  • Hardware. A half-zip uses a zip that stays joined at the bottom. A full-zip uses a zip that comes apart at the bottom. These are two different products, not two lengths of the same product. Chapter 2 covers why.
  • On-and-off feel. Half-zip is a pullover. A full-zip jacket is a jacket. That feel shapes who buys it and when they wear it.
  • The front panel. A half-zip keeps a solid, unbroken lower front. A full-zip splits the front down the middle. That matters enormously for branding, which we cover in Chapter 6.

Quick gut check:

Ask one question: should the wearer be able to take it fully off and open it like a jacket? If yes, you’re looking at a full zip. If the piece is meant to layer like a sweatshirt with a bit of neck ventilation, you’re looking at a half-zip.

Chapter 02

How the Placket and Zip Are Constructed on Each:

This is the chapter most brands skip. Don’t.

The placket is the strip of fabric that carries the zip.

How it is built, and which zip sits inside it, decides your cost, your quality risk, and your factory’s workload.

Two builds, two very different jobs.

The half-zip uses a closed-end zip:

A half-zip carries a closed-end zip. “Closed-end” means the bottom stays fastened.

The slider can never run off the chain, because a stop blocks it.

The zip terminates partway down the chest.

Below that point, the front is one continuous piece of fabric.

The placket is sewn into a slit, and the bottom of the zip is anchored and bartacked inside the garment.

This build is forgiving. Closed-end zips are easy to source.

You can buy them ready-made or make them from continuous zip chains cut to length and closed at the bottom.

That flexibility is a real production advantage.

The full-zip uses a separating zip:

A full zip needs a separating zip. Separating means the two sides come fully apart at the bottom.

That split is made possible by two parts at the base: an insertion pin on one side and a retainer box on the other.

You feed the pin into the box, then zip up.

This pin-and-box is what lets a jacket open all the way.

Here is the catch. That pin-and-box is fixed onto the tape under high heat and high pressure.

It is machine-made only. You cannot attach it by hand, and you cannot make a separating zip from the chain by the yard.

You buy it finished, at the exact length, every time.

So a full-zip locks you into a more specialized, less flexible component from the start.

Slider locking is part of the spec:

A long, vertical front opening has a habit of creeping open on its own.

To stop that, a full-front zip usually wants an auto-lock or semi-auto-lock slider that grips the chain and holds position when you let go.

A half-zip is shorter and sits higher, so the pressure to self-open is lower.

You can still spec a locking slider for feel and quality, but it is less critical.

Either way, put it in your tech pack; it’s an easy line to forget.

Gauge and material, kept simple:

Zips are sized by gauge, written with a hash: #3 #5 #8. The number is the chain width in millimeters.

Bigger number, heavier, and more rugged.

For hoodies, the common picks are a #3 or #5 nylon coil or a #5 to #8 molded plastic (often called Vislon), with chain widths around 5-8 mm depending on how heavy the fleece is.

The coil sits flatter and softer. Molded plastic reads chunkier and sportier.

A half-zip can comfortably run a lighter coil; a full-zip carrying the whole front often steps up because it does more work.

Why alignment is the hidden quality risk:

On a full-zip, both tape edges run the entire body.

They must finish dead level at the hem and match at the collar seam.

Tolerances are tight; even a 2 mm misalignment can make the slider jam or pull the front panel out of true.

Good factories pre-baste with position markers, sew with a twin-needle lockstitch at a 2-3 mm seam allowance, then press and inspect the front edge flat.

A half-zip has far less tape to align, and the lower front is fixed, so its alignment risk is smaller.

That lower risk is one reason half-zips are kinder on a first run.

Chapter 03

What Does Each Zip Style Cost You to Make?

Now the money. Brands often assume the zip is a rounding error.

Sometimes it is. Sometimes it quietly drags your margin.

The zip itself: length and type both push cost

Two things move the price of the zip.

  • Length: A half-zip uses a short zip, often 15-30 cm. A full-zip uses the full body length, often 60–75 cm: more chain, more tape, more cost.
  • Type: A separating zip carries the pin-and-box and is machine-finished to length. It is generally pricier and harder to source than an equivalent closed-end zip, which is cheaper and easier to cut to size.

So the full-zip loses on both counts.

It needs a longer zip and a more expensive type of zip.

The half-zip wins the hardware line every time.

Put the numbers in perspective:

Zips are cheap relative to the garment. That is the honest headline.

YKK, the brand most reputable factories default to, makes roughly half the world’s zips and is the industry benchmark.

Even so, a basic zip is a small fraction of a hoodie’s cost. On a single piece, the half-zip-versus-full-zip hardware gap is small in absolute terms.

Landed cost per garment. A client sent an inquiry with their design and quantity of 100 pieces of a zip-up and half-zip hoodie.

We quoted $50 for a half-zip and $60 for a full zip.

The price is completely subject to your design and the level of customization you need.

The price for each hoodie is different.

Where the gap actually bites: scale and labor:

Multiply that small gap by your order, and add labor, and it starts to matter.

A full-zip is more work to assemble: aligning a full separating placket along the whole body, anchoring a hood or collar over a long opening, and inspecting the front edge end to end.

That is more machine time and more inspection time per unit than a half-zip’s short, fixed placket.

YKK vs. generic: the real trade-off

You’ll be tempted to save on hardware with a generic zip.

Be careful, especially on the full-zip.

On a low-volume pilot, a generic open-end zip can shave a modest amount per garment versus YKK, which looks like a win on the quote.

But the saving evaporates if zips fail.

A failed separating zip can render the whole garment unwearable, and rework on a separating front is expensive.

On the part that takes the most abuse, the full-front zip, the case for a proven supplier is strongest.

On a half-zip, with a shorter closed-end zip under less stress, a vetted generic is a more defensible economy.

Costing rule of thumb:

When you quote the two styles, compare three lines, not one: hardware cost (zip length + type), assembly labor (placket length, hood, or collar), and quality-control overhead plus expected rework risk.

Chapter 04

How the Neck Finishes: Funnel Collar vs. Hood

The top of the garment is where these two styles look most different.

It also drives a lot of the buying decisions.

Both can, in theory, take either neck. In practice, each pair naturally with one.

The half-zip’s home is the funnel collar:

A half-zip almost always ends in a stand-up collar; call it a funnel neck, a mock neck, or a stand collar.

Unzip a few inches, and it opens at the throat for air; zip it up, and it closes snug against the wind.

It frames the face cleanly and reads tidy and modern.

This is why funnel-neck half-zips dominate smart-casual and athleisure:

structure without the bulk of a hood.

The full-zip’s home is the hood:

A full-zip is the natural home of the hood, the classic zip-up hoodie.

Because the front opens all the way, the hood can be attached over a continuous opening and worn up or down with the zip fully closed or open.

A full-zip can also take a stand collar instead, giving you a zip-up sweatshirt or track-top look.

So the full-zip is the more flexible of the two at the neck.

What does each finish cost and complicate?

  • Funnel collar: Relatively simple. A band, often self-fabric or ribbed, sewn to the neckline and closed at the top of the zip. Low complexity, low risk.
  • Hood: More complex. Multiple panels, often a lining, plus drawcords and trims, eyelets or bartacks, and a clean join across the full opening. More pieces, more steps, more places to get it wrong.

So a half-zip with a funnel collar is the lighter build at the neck.

A full zip with a hood is the heaviest.

A full zip with a stand collar sits in between.

Match the neck to the wearer’s intent:

  • Want clean ventilation and a layering-friendly, put-together look? Funnel-collar half-zip.
  • Want warmth, coverage, and street or casual versatility? Hooded full-zip.
  • Want a sporty zip-up without a hood? Full-zip with a stand collar.

The neck is not a small styling afterthought.

It sets the temperature of the whole garment literally and in terms of audience.

Chapter 05

Who Each Style Is For (and How It Positions Your Brand)

Construction and cost tell you what you can make.

This chapter tells you what you should make, based on who is buying.

Position them on purpose.

The half-zip says “smart, layered, put-together.”

A half-zip reads polished.

The funnel collar and pullover silhouette feel considered rather than casual.

It thrives in a few clear lanes.

  • Athleisure and golf: A staple of the on-course and off-court wardrobe. Sharp, and layered over a tee or polo.
  • Corporate and team merch: A funnel-neck half-zip is a workwear and custom-merch favorite. It looks professional and carries a logo well.
  • Premium basics: A clean half-zip in good fabric reads quietly expensive, ideal for brands that want to look elevated without shouting.

The full-zip says “versatile, everyday, easy.”

A full zip is the workhorse the piece people grab without thinking.

  • Streetwear and casual: The zip-up hoodie is a foundational street piece that anchors a casual collection.
  • All-day practicality: Goes on and off without messing up hair, opens for temperature control, and layers over almost anything.
  • Broad reach: So familiar and flexible that it appeals to the widest possible audience. Fewer shoppers say no to a good zip-up.

How does the choice position your brand?

The zip style is a signal, not just a feature. Lead with half-zips, and you tilt premium, athletic, and considered.

Lead with full-zips, and you tilt accessible, everyday, and broad.

Neither is better; they’re different shelves in the shopper’s mind.

The risk is picking one by accident and confusing your own positioning.

Use both, but on purpose:

Many brands run both.

A common structure: full-zip hoodies as the broad, dependable core, and half-zips as the elevated, higher-margin accent.

The full-zip pulls volume; the half-zip lifts perceived value.

If you run both, make the roles explicit in your line plan.

Chapter 06

What Each Placket Means for Your Branding and Decoration

This is where the front-panel difference from Chapter 1 pays off or costs you.

Where your logo goes, and how clean it looks, depends on how much unbroken fabric the front gives you.

The full-zip splits your canvas:

A full-zip runs a zip straight down the center front, dividing your chest into two halves with a hard line and hardware between them.

That has consequences.

  • A centered chest logo has nowhere clean to sit; it would land on the zip.
  • Large front prints or embroidery get interrupted by the placket and teeth.
  • You’re pushed to the left chest, the sleeve, the hood, or the back for clean branding.

None of this is fatal. It just narrows your front options, and it means front-and-center artwork usually doesn’t work.

The half-zip gives you a clean lower chest:

A half-zip stops the zip mid-chest.

Below that, the front is one solid, unbroken panel, a gift for decoration.

  • A centered chest logo sits clean, below the zip, on flat fabric.
  • Larger front prints and embroidery have room to breathe.
  • The funnel collar and short placket frame the design rather than cutting it.

If front-and-center branding matters to you or your client, the half-zip is the stronger canvas, full stop.

Why do decorators like the stand collar too?

The neck finish helps as well. Stand-up collars and dense, structured fabric give embroidery and screen print a stable, crisp surface.

That’s exactly why blank half-zips are custom merch and corporate favorites:

The collar and panel take a logo well, and the result looks professional.

For B2B and team orders, that decoration quality is a selling point in itself.

Plan the placement before you pick the zip:

  • Decide where the brand mark must live: centered chest? left chest? sleeve? back?
  • If the answer is a centered chest with any real size, lean half-zip.
  • If the left chest, sleeve, or back is fine, the full-zip’s split front is no obstacle.

Decide on decoration first, then let it inform the zip.

Too many brands do it backwards and then fight the placket.

Middle path:

Love the full-zip but hate the visible zip line?

A concealed placket hides the zip behind a flap of fabric.

It cleans up the front and gives more room for central branding at the cost of an extra construction step.

Worth it for a premium piece, overkill for a basic.

Chapter 07

Which One to Choose for Your First Production Run?

If this is an early run or a new factory relationship, complexity is a risk.

This chapter is the blunt recommendation.

Why is the half-zip the lower-risk first run?

  • Simpler hardware: A closed-end zip is easy to source, easy to cut to length, and forgiving to set. No pin-and-box to manage.
  • Less alignment risk: Short placket, fixed lower front far fewer rejects for a warped or jamming front.
  • Lighter neck build: A funnel collar is a simple band. No hood panels, linings, drawcords, or eyelets to get wrong.
  • Lower hardware spend: Shorter, cheaper zip, so less money tied up if the first run has issues.

Add it up, and the half-zip is the gentler way to test a factory, a fabric, and a fit.

Why is the full-zip harder to get right early?

A full-zip stack up the exact things that trip up early runs: a separating zip you must buy finished to length, with an auto-lock slider you can’t forget.

A full-length placket that must finish level at the hem and match at the collar, and usually a hood, the most complex neck build.

None of this is beyond a good factory, but it’s more to verify before you trust the line with volume.

The honest trade-off:

The half-zip is the safer build.

The full-zip is the broader seller.

So the lowest-risk piece is not always the highest-volume piece.

Resolve it with your goal for the run.

  • Is the goal to validate quality and fit with minimum risk? Start with a half-zip.
  • The goal is to launch your hero product, and the full-zip is it? Build the full zip but de-risk it deliberately.

How to de-risk a full-zip first run?

  • Spec a proven zip supplier for the separating front. Not the place to chase the last cent.
  • Lock the slider type as auto-lock or semi-auto-lock in the tech pack.
  • Require a pre-production sample and check the front edge: level hem, matched collar, smooth slider, no warp.
  • Add an inline check for zip alignment, since even a 2 mm error causes jams.

Two out of three usually settles it.

The half-zip is the lean, polished, decoration-friendly, lower-risk choice.

The full-zip is the versatile, broad-appeal, hero-product choice that costs and complicates more.

Choose by your audience, your branding, and your appetite for risk on this run not by which one looks nicer on a mood board.
