Chapter 01
What the acid-wash look actually is on a tee?
Acid wash is a high-contrast, marbled finish. Sharp light patches sit over a darker base.
On a good one the contrast looks organic, like the color was worn away by time, not a machine.
Not the finish you meant?
Acid wash is a contrast effect marbling over a dark base. If you want the opposite a soft, even, lived-in tonal color with no marbling that’s a different process: garment-dyed tee manufacturing. This page is only about the marbled, distressed look.
Here’s the first thing most brands get wrong: there is no acid in acid wash.
The name is a misnomer that stuck. The effect is oxidation, not acid burning.
How is the marble made?
The classic method uses pumice stones soaked in an oxidizer, usually potassium permanganate, sometimes chlorine bleach.
The wet stones are tumbled with dry or nearly dry garments in a rotary drum.
Where a wet stone touches the fabric, it strips the dye at that exact spot.
Thousands of random contacts later, you get the marble.
Because the stones are soaked and the garments are dry, the reaction happens in sharp localized hits.
That’s what gives acid wash its crisp, mottled contrast instead of an even fade.
You’ll also hear it called moon wash, snow wash, or marble wash, same family, different intensity settings.
After the tumble, the garments are neutralized.
A reducing agent such as sodium metabisulphite kills the oxidation and clears the brown-purple manganese residue the permanganate leaves behind.
Then rinse, soften, and dry. Skip or rush the neutralizing step, and the reaction keeps creeping in storage; the tee you approved keeps getting lighter for weeks.
That’s a real defect we’ve seen come back from cheaper wash houses.
Why does a jersey behave differently from denim?
Acid wash was born on denim. Denim is a heavy, woven, indigo-dyed twill; it takes a beating and holds its shape.
A tee is a single jersey knit. It’s thinner and softer, it curls at the edges, and it distorts under agitation.
The same stone load that gives denim a clean marble can overbite a light jersey.
This is exactly why heavyweight matters.
A denser jersey gives the stones something to work against without tearing.
It’s the difference between a controllable finish and a bag of holes.
If you want the acid-wash look on a tee, spec the weight up.
Process literacy:
Acid wash is one member of a bigger family enzyme, stone, mineral, pigment, garment dye, and more. If you’re not sure which wash gives the effect you’re picturing, start with our garment wash types guide and come back here for the marble specifically.
