Cropping a hoodie is not cutting a hoodie short.

Do it that way, and you get problems.

The hem flips. The body curls up at the edge. The proportions look off: too wide for the length or too long to read as a crop at all.

The kangaroo pocket ends up sliced in half or hanging below the hem.

A deliberate crop is engineered. The length is set against the body block, not guessed.

The design is chosen on purpose. The hem is finished so it stays flat.

The pocket is rebuilt to fit the new length. The fabric is heavy enough to hold the shape.

This is the checklist we work through with brands before a cropped hoodie goes into sampling.

Eight steps, in order.

Follow them, and you can brief a factory properly or read a sample and know what to fix.

Each step gives you the decision, the logic behind it, and what to put on the tech pack.

STEP 01

Set the crop length against the body block:

This is the first decision and the one that controls everything else.

A crop length is not “10 cm shorter.” It is a fixed point on the body, measured the same way every time.

Measure from the high point of the shoulder:

Body length on a tech pack is measured from the HPS, the high point of the shoulder, straight down to the hem.

A standard adult hoodie lands around 68-72 cm from HPS, sitting at the hip.

A crop pulls that up.

Most cropped hoodies finish between 48 cm and 58 cm from HPS.

That range covers the navel up to the natural waist.

Pick the landing point on the body first.

Then convert it to an HPS measurement. That number goes on the spec, not “short.”

Factory data:

The 48-58 cm range is an industry benchmark. Gibben Clothing is following this standard. But if you need to make the length a custom size, then our cut-to-sew services come into action.

Where the hem sits changes the read:

A few inches change the whole garment.

A crop at the natural waist reads as a clean, wearable crop. Easy to style. Works on most bodies.

A crop above the navel reads as a statement crop, more fashion-forward, showing the midriff on most wearers, a narrower customer.

Decide which one you are selling.

Tell the factory the exact landing point. Do not leave it to the patternmaker to interpret.

Account for the rib band in the number:

Here is the trap.

The rib band adds length. If your finished length target is 52 cm and you add a 5 cm rib band.

Your body panel has to be cut shorter so the band brings it back to 52 cm.

The body panel and the band are two separate measurements that add up to the finished length.

State the finished length. Then state the band depth separately.

The patternmaker handles the math, but only if both numbers are on the sheet.

STEP 02

Choose the silhouette: boxy or fitted

Two cropped hoodies at the same length can look like completely different garments.

The difference is the silhouette, and it is built into the pattern, not the fabric.

You are choosing between boxy and fitted before anything else gets drawn.

Boxy: width, drop shoulder, straight sides

A boxy crop is wide through the body and short through the length.

The side seams run straight down with little or no taper.

The shoulder is dropped; the seam sits out past the natural shoulder point.

This is the current default for streetwear.

It pairs naturally with a crop because the width plays against the short length.

Pattern markers for a boxy crop:


  • Wider chest measurement than body width.

  • Dropped shoulder seam, often 4-8 cm past the natural point.

  • Straight or near-straight side seams.

  • A wider, lower armhole to match the drop.

The risk with boxy is that wide plus short can tip into “too small.” Watch the ratio.

A very wide body on a very high crop can look like the wearer shrank the garment by accident.

Fitted: taper, set-in shoulder, shaped sides

A fitted crop follows the body. The side seams taper in toward the waist.

The shoulder is set closer to the natural point.

The armhole is higher and tighter. This reads more polished and more feminine in most ranges.

It suits a customer who wants the crop to look intentional and tailored rather than oversized.

Pattern markers for a fitted crop:

  • Body width closer to the actual chest measurement.

  • Set-in or lightly dropped shoulder.

  • Side seams tapered toward the hem.

  • Higher, narrower armhole.

Check the hood against the new body:

There is a proportion trap that only shows up on a crop.

The hood. A hood is sized off a standard hoodie body.

Shrink the body to a crop, and the hood does not shrink with it.

Suddenly the hood looks large, sometimes too large, sitting on top of a small body.

This is more obvious on a fitted crop than a boxy one.

A boxy crop has width to carry a full hood.

A fitted crop can end up looking top-heavy.

Two fixes.

Keep the full hood as a deliberate oversized-hood look, which suits streetwear.

Or scale the hood down slightly so it sits in proportion to the cropped body.

Either is valid, but it is a choice to make, not a thing to discover on the sample.

Specify the hood height and width, and look at it against the body on the first sample.

Decide before sampling, not after:

The silhouette is a pattern choice.

Changing it after the first sample means a new pattern, not an alteration. Pick one.

Reference an existing garment if you have it; send the factory a hoodie that has the body shape you want, even if the length is wrong.

Shape and length are separate decisions, and you can communicate them separately.

STEP 03

Finish the hem so it stays flat:

This is the step that fails most often on a first sample.

A crop puts the hem in a high-visibility spot, right across the middle of the garment. If it curls or flips, everyone sees it.

Knit fabric wants to curl. That is physics, not a defect.

French terry and fleece curl toward one face at a raw edge.

Your job is to choose a finish that controls it.

Option A: ribbed band

A ribbed band is the classic hoodie hem.

A separate strip of rib knit, stitched to the bottom of the body, usually 1×1 or 2×2 rib.

It solves curl completely. Rib does not curl.

It also cinches the hem slightly, which holds the crop against the body and stops it from riding up.

This is the safe choice. If you want a crop that behaves, specify a rib band.

Specify it with the rib type (1×1 or 2×2), band depth (commonly 4-6 cm finished), and whether it is the same color as the body or in contrast.

Option B: raw or rolled hem

A raw hem cut and left, or lightly coverstitched, gives a rawer, more fashion look.

A rolled hem leans into the natural curl as a design feature.

This only works on the right fabric.

A heavier French terry or a brushed-back fleece holds a raw edge better than a light loopback

A thin fabric with a raw hem will flip, full stop.

If you want raw, the fabric decision in Step 5 has to back it up.

Raw hem and light fabric do not go together.

Option C: folded and stitched hem

A turned-up hem, folded once and coverstitched.

Cleaner than raw, less structured than a band. It sits between the two.

It controls curl better than a raw edge but does not cinch like a band.

Good for a relaxed crop that still needs the edge to behave.

Option D: curved or high-low hem

A straight hem is the default, but it is not the only option.

A curved hem drops slightly lower at the back than the front.

A high-low hem exaggerates that noticeably shorter at the front.

On a crop, this matters more than on a full hoodie.

A front that sits high and a back that drops a little is more flattering and more wearable than a dead-level crop.

It can ride up at the front when the arms lift.

If you want this, spec two lengths from HPS: a front length and a back length, not one.

The patternmaker curves the hemline between them.

The stitch matters too:

How the hem is sewn shows on the finished edge.

A coverstitch gives the twin parallel lines you see on most knitwear hems and is the standard for a folded or banded hem.

A single needle looks cheaper on a knit edge.

Specify the stitch type, not just the finish. It is a visible detail on a high-visibility hem.

Hem finishes at a glance

Tell the factory the finish and the exact band or fold depth. “Hem it” is not a spec.

STEP 04

Rebuild the kangaroo pocket:

This is the construction conflict nobody plans for.

You crop the body, and the standard kangaroo pocket no longer fits.

A normal kangaroo pocket sits low on the body.

Crop the hem up to the waist, and the pocket either gets cut off at the bottom or hangs below the new hemline.

Neither works. You have four ways out.

Remove it:

The cleanest fix. No pocket.

The front becomes a flat panel.

Many cropped hoodies skip the pocket entirely, and the look is cleaner for it.

If the pocket does not earn its place, drop it.

Fewer construction steps, lower cost, no conflict.

Shrink it:

Keep a pocket but make it smaller.

A reduced-height pocket bag with the opening raised so the whole thing sits above the hem.

This keeps functioning in a crop.

It needs care: the pocket has to clear the hem with seam allowance.

The patternmaker works backward from the hemline to place the pocket opening.

Relocate it:

Raise the whole pocket to the body. Same size, higher position.

This can look odd if pushed too high; a kangaroo pocket sitting near the chest reads strange.

There is limited room on a crop, so a relocated pocket usually has to shrink too.

Often “relocate” and “shrink” end up being the same fix.

Switch the pocket type:

Drop the kangaroo entirely and use side-seam pockets or a single welt.

These sit in the side seam or as a slit, not on the front panel, so they clear the length problem.

This changes the look. It moves the hoodie away from classic streetwear toward something more refined.

A valid choice if it suits the range.

The pocket opening and the full pocket bag must sit above the finished hemline, with seam allowance to spare.

Whatever you choose, put the pocket placement on the tech pack as a measurement from HPS, the same way you set the length. Do not let it float.

STEP 05:

Pick fabric with enough body:

A crop shows more structure than a full hoodie because there is less garment to hide a weak fabric.

A flimsy crop looks cheap immediately. Weight and structure both matter.

Get them right, and the crop holds its shape on the body and on the rail.

Weight: aim heavier than you think

Fabric weight is measured in GSM grams per square meter.

For a cropped hoodie, the working range is roughly.

  • French terry: 280-340 GSM
  • Brushed-back fleece: 300-400 GSM

Below about 240 GSM, you are in flimsy territory.

The crop loses shape, the hem misbehaves, and the whole garment feels disposable.

A crop has less fabric to give it presence, so the fabric it does have needs body.

Heavier fabric also helps; a heavier fabric resists curl and holds a raw or folded edge far better than a light one.

Structure: loopback and brushed back

GSM is not the whole story.

How the fabric is built matters as much as how much it weighs.

Loopback French terry has visible loops on the inside, a natural body and structure, and is good for a crop that needs to stand on its own.

Brushed-back fleece is sanded on the inside for softness and warmth; it is denser and holds shape well.

A dense knit construction holds a crop. An open, loose knit drapes and collapses, which fights the shape you are trying to build.

Test the shrinkage before you trust the length:

This is the one most brands forget, and it hurts a crop more than a full hoodie.

Knit fabric shrinks in the first wash.

French terry and fleece commonly shrink 3-7% in length unless the fabric is pre-shrunk or compacted.

On a full hoodie, a 5% length shrink is a couple of centimeters annoying, survivable.

On a crop, that same 5% is taken off an already-short length, so the proportion shifts more.

Your clean waist crop washes up into a higher, tighter crop you did not design.

Two things to do. Ask the mill for pre-shrunk or compacted fabric, which holds its measurements far better.

And wash-test the sample before you approve it.

Measure the length before and after a wash, and set your pattern length so the garment lands right after shrinkage, not before.

Build the expected shrinkage into the body length; the patternmaker can add it back if you tell them the shrink percentage.

Match the fabric to the hem:

This connects back to Step 3.

If you chose a raw or rolled hem, you need the heavier end of the range, 320 GSM and up, with a brushed back if possible.

A light fabric with a raw hem will flip and look unfinished.

If you chose a rib band, you have more freedom on weight, because the band carries the structure at the edge.

Decide on the hem and the fabric together. They are one decision, not two.

STEP 06

Handle the cropped oversized hybrid:

The most-requested crop right now is not plain.

It is the cropped-oversized hybrid.

Wide and roomy in the body and sleeves, but short in length.

It is a genuinely different pattern problem, because two of its features pull in opposite directions.

Oversized wants to grow the garment. Cropped wants to shrink it.

You are doing both at once, in different places.

Width and sleeve grow, length stays short:

The pattern keeps the oversized features:

  • Generous body width, well past the chest measurement.
  • Pronounced drop shoulder.
  • Long, wide sleeves.
  • Wide armhole

And it keeps the cropped feature: short body length, set against the body block as in Step 1.

The trick is keeping these independent. The body is wide and short.

Not wide and proportionally short; actually short, by the HPS number you set.

Watch the proportion drift:

Here is where it goes wrong. When a body is very wide, the eye expects some length to balance it.

Cut it very short as well, and it can read as undersized rather than intentionally cropped. The fix is the ratio.

There is a window where wide-and-short reads as a deliberate oversized crop, and outside that window it reads as a mistake.

Sample it on a real body and look at the balance.

Adjust the length, not the width, to tune it; width is the look you are selling, and length is the dial you turn.

Sleeve length still matters:

On an oversized crop, the sleeves are long and wide, but the cuff still needs to land right.

A dropped shoulder already adds length down the arm.

Keep the total sleeve from getting so long the cuffs swallow the hands, unless that is the look.

Specify the sleeve length from center back, the way you would on any drop-shoulder garment, so the drop is accounted for.

Pick fabric weight for the volume:

Fabric behaves differently once there is more of it.

An oversized crop has a lot of body fabric hanging from the shoulders, so the weight reads heavier on the body than the same fabric in a fitted cut.

A very heavy fabric on an oversized crop can look bulky and stiff.

A mid-weight fabric drapes and moves, which usually suits the relaxed look better.

If you are going oversized, you can often come down slightly from the heaviest end of the range and still hold shape, because the volume itself gives the garment presence.

Sample the oversized version in the actual weight before you commit; drape is hard to judge from a swatch.

STEP 07

Grade the crop without losing proportion:

Grading is how one sample size becomes a full-size run.

For a crop, standard grading breaks the design, so this step needs attention.

The problem is length. If you grade the body length the normal way, your crop stops being a crop in the bigger sizes.

Why does standard length grading fail?

A full hoodie usually grades the body length by around 2 cm per size.

That keeps proportion on a long garment.

Apply that to a crop and watch what happens.

The XS crop is genuinely cropped. By 2XL, you have added 8-10 cm of length across the run.

The biggest size is now barely cropped at all.

The design intent is gone at the top of the range.

The crop has to stay a crop in every size. That is the rule.

Grade length conservatively:

The fix is to grade the body length by a smaller increment.

Often 1 to 1.5 cm per size instead of the standard 2 cm, sometimes less.

Width still grades; normally bigger bodies need bigger widths.

Sleeves still grade normally. Only the body length is held back, so the crop reads the same from the smallest size to the largest.

This is a deliberate choice you specify, not something the grader does automatically.

A grader following standard rules will grade the length normally unless you tell them not to.

Grade the pocket and band too:

The rebuilt pocket from Step 4 has to grade with the body.

So does the rib band.

If the band depth stays fixed while the body grades, the proportion shifts to the larger sizes.

Set the grade rules for the body, the pocket placement, the pocket size, and the band depth. Each one needs its own rule on the grade sheet.

Sample more than one size:

Approve the base size, then sample at least one size at each end of the run:

the smallest and the largest.

The crop proportion is exactly the thing that drifts across sizes, so check it where it is most likely to break.

STEP 08

Build the spec sheet:

Everything above becomes a tech pack. This is what converts the design into a garment a factory can quote and cut.

Hand a factory a clear spec, and you get an accurate quote and a sample that matches your intent.

Hand them a vague one, and you get guesses.

  • Armhole depth.
  • Side seam shape (straight or tapered).
  • Hood height and width, checked against the cropped body.
Hem:
  • Hem finish (rib band / raw / folded / curved).
  • Band or fold depth in cm.
  • Rib type if banded (1×1 or 2×2).
  • Stitch type (coverstitch / other).
  • Body panel length adjusted for band.
Pocket:
  • Pocket decision (remove / shrink / relocate / switch type).
  • Pocket placement from HPS, in cm.
  • Pocket size, if kept.
  • Confirmed: pocket clears the hem with seam allowance.
Fabric:
  • Fabric type (French terry / brushed fleece).
  • GSM weight.
  • Structure (loopback / brushed back).
  • Fabric matched to hem finish.
  • Shrinkage tested; length adjusted for it.
  • Pre-shrunk / compacted fabric confirmed where possible.
Sleeves & cuffs:
  • Sleeve length from center back
  • Cuff type and depth
  • Drop shoulder accounted for in sleeve length
Grading:
  • Size run confirmed.
  • Body length grade increment (conservative for crop).
  • Width and sleeve grade rules.
  • Pocket and band grade rules.
  • End-of-run sizes flagged for sampling.

Send this with a reference garment if you have one. Reference plus measurements beats either alone.

Common launch questions

Most cropped hoodies finish between 48 cm and 58 cm from the high point of the shoulder, which covers the navel up to the natural waist.

Aim heavier than you might expect: roughly 280-340 GSM for French terry and 300-400 GSM for brushed-back fleece.

Below about 240 GSM, a crop looks flimsy because there’s less garment to carry a weak fabric.

Structure matters too; a dense loopback or brushed-back knit holds shape, whereas an open, loose knit collapses.

Grade the body length conservatively, often 1 to 1.5 cm per size instead of the standard 2 cm, so the crop stays a crop in the largest sizes.

Width and sleeves grade normally.

This is a deliberate instruction to the grader, not automatic.

Also grade the pocket placement and the rib band, and sample the smallest and largest sizes to check the proportion holds.

The shrinkage percentage is the same, but the effect is bigger.

French terry and fleece commonly shrink 3-7% in length.

On an already-short crop, that shift is more noticeable, turning a clean waist crop into a higher, tighter one.

Ask the mill for pre-shrunk or compacted fabric, wash-test the sample, and build the expected shrinkage into the pattern length.
