Pick up a hoodie made from bamboo viscose or modal, and the first thing you notice is the hand that cool, fluid, almost slippery softness that cotton fleece never quite delivers.
It’s a genuine selling point. Brands build whole identities on “the softest hoodie you’ll ever wear.”
But soft-hand fabrics are a family with quirks, and most brands meet those quirks for the first time after the bulk order has shipped.
The fabric drapes instead of holding its shape. It moves in the wash.
A dye lot comes back a shade off. And then there’s the part almost nobody plans for: in the United States, you can’t actually call it “bamboo” on the label.
This guide walks the whole comfort-led fabric family bamboo viscose, modal, lyocell (TENCEL-type fibers), and their blends the way we spec them on the floor.
The organizing idea is simple, and it’s the one thing to hold onto: every gram of hand-feel you add costs you somewhere else.
Structure, dimensional stability, dye consistency, or margin. We built a small artifact to price that trade, and it runs through the whole guide. We call it the Soft-Hand Trade Sheet.
