Chapter 1

What a pattern actually is

A pattern is the garment’s blueprint.

It is the set of flat shapes front, back, sleeves, cuffs, pockets, facings that get cut out of fabric and sewn together into the thing you designed.

Every seam, curve, and notch on that shape is a decision. Change the shape, and you change the garment; there is no garment without it.

A sketch is not a pattern

This is the gap that costs founders money.

A drawing, a reference hoodie, and a mood board describe what you want.

A pattern is the engineering that enables repeatability.

When you hand a factory a sample garment and say “like this,” someone still has to reverse-engineer the flat shapes behind it; that work is pattern making, and it is not free just because the design already exists in your head.

Blocks, seam allowance, and the pieces

A few terms you will hear quoted, in plain terms:

  • Block (or sloper): a master template for a basic shape, a body block, or a sleeve block that a factory adapts into your specific style. Think of it as a starting skeleton, not the finished pattern.

  • Seam allowance: the extra margin added around each piece so it can actually be sewn. A pattern without it is not production-ready.

  • Pattern pieces: the count matters. A boxy tee might be four or five pieces; a cut-and-sew jacket with a lining and welt pockets can be twenty-plus. Piece count is one of the biggest drivers of what a pattern costs to make.

  • Grainlines and notches: the marks that tell the cutter which way the fabric runs and how pieces line up. Invisible to you, essential to fit.

Chapter 2

The Pattern Cost Ladder: What it costs and why

Here is the question every guide dodges because most cannot answer it: what does a pattern actually cost?

The honest answer is that it depends on how it gets made, and that lands on three rungs.

We call it the Pattern Cost Ladder, and where your garment sits on it decides your bill and your timeline.

Every pattern is built one of three ways: by adapting a block, by partial development, or from scratch. Each rung costs more, takes longer, and carries more fit risk than the one below it. Know which rung your garment sits on, and you know why you are being quoted what you are being quoted.

Block adaptation

Your style is close enough to an existing block that the factory adapts a proven shape, a standard crew tee or a pullover hoodie, to your measurements and details. Least development work, least fit risk, quickest turnaround. Most first drops from a new brand start here, and that is a good thing.

Rung 2 · Mid-cost · Moderate timeline

Partial development

A block gets you most of the way, but your design changes something structural: a dropped shoulder, an unusual panel, a specific oversized volume. The factory starts from a block and develops the new parts. More sampling, more back-and-forth, more cost than Rung 1.

Rung 3 · Highest cost · Longest

Full from-scratch development

No block fits. The pattern is drafted anew: a complex jacket, a novel silhouette, and heavy construction. Most pattern-making hours, most correction rounds, and most fit risk. This is where “it’s just a hoodie” quotes and reality part ways.

What actually moves the number

Cost is not about how simple the garment looks. It is driven by:

  • Piece count and construction: more pieces and more complex seams mean more pattern work.

  • Correction rounds: every fit sample that comes back wrong is another loop of pattern edits. Good specs up front cut this down.

  • Digitizing: turning a paper pattern into a clean CAD file is real work, and it is what makes the pattern portable and gradable later.

  • Whether grading is included: the base-size pattern and the graded size run are two separate jobs. Sometimes quoted together, sometimes not always ask.

Block patterns vs. from-scratch development

This is the decision underneath the Cost Ladder, and founders get talked into the expensive side of it more often than they should.

A block is not a lesser pattern. It is a proven starting point that saves you money and fits risk, and for most streetwear, it is the right call.

When a block is the smart choice

  • Your silhouette is a recognizable category: tee, hoodie, crewneck, or sweatpant, even if your details are distinctive.

  • You want speed to the first sample and a predictable fit you can build a brand on.

  • You are early, and every dollar you do not spend re-inventing a hoodie body is a dollar toward fabric, wash, or decoration that customers actually see.

When from-scratch earns its cost,

  • The silhouette itself is the point: an unusual proportion or construction no block captures.

  • You have validated demand and fit matters enough to justify the development hours.

  • You are building a signature block you will reuse across future drops, so the cost amortizes.

The trap is paying Rung 3 prices for a Rung 1 garment because nobody framed the choice.

A good factory will tell you when a block will do. That honesty is a signal worth more than the saving.

Chapter 4

Grading: one size into a full run

You have a pattern. It is one size.

Grading is how that single approved pattern becomes your whole size run XS through 3XL without redrafting each one by hand.

It is a separate job from pattern making, and it is where a surprising amount of fit quality is won or lost.

Grading is not “scale it up by a percentage.”

This is the single most useful thing to understand.

Bodies do not get uniformly bigger.

A larger customer is not a photocopy of a smaller one; enlarged shoulders, chest, and length all grow at different rates.

So grading does not scale the whole pattern by one percentage. It moves specific points by specific amounts.

The term that matters

Grade rules

grade rule is the fixed amount a single measurement point changes from one size to the next. The chest might grow one amount between sizes, the length another, and the sleeve another. A full set of grade rules is what turns your base size into a consistent run where every size feels like the same garment, just bigger or smaller.

A few things that follow from that are worth knowing as the buyer:

  • There is a base size. Grading starts from one approved, fitted size, usually a middle size, and works outward in both directions. Get the base size right first; everything else is built on it.

  • Grade rules are style- and fabric-specific. A relaxed knit hoodie does not grade like a structured woven jacket. A real factory keeps rule libraries for different garment types rather than reusing one set.

  • Streetwear’s oversized fits still need honest grading. “Oversized” is a fit intention, not an excuse to skip proper grading. An oversized S and an oversized XXL still have to read as the same design.

  • Grading has limits. Stretch a base pattern across too many sizes, and the shape distorts at the extremes. Wide size ranges sometimes need more than one base or targeted correction, not just bigger numbers.

Grading also leans directly on your measurement spec, the size chart, and points of measure that tell the grader what each size should actually measure.

If that groundwork is shaky, grading inherits the problem, which is why it is worth getting your sizing and measurement spec settled before the size run is cut.

Chapter 5

Who owns the pattern? The Ownership Line

You paid to develop the pattern. Do you own it? A lot of founders assume yes, find out later the answer is no, and discover that what customers actually come back for is effectively held by a factory they have outgrown. This chapter is the one to get right in writing.

The rule to hold

If you paid for the pattern’s development, you should own the pattern, the tech pack, and the production files in a usable digital format, and your agreement should say so before any money moves. Anything shorter than that, you are renting your own fit.

Why it matters more than it sounds

  • It is your exit ramp. If you ever need to change factories for better pricing, higher MOQs you cannot meet, or a relationship that soured, owning the pattern means you take your fit with you. Not owning it can mean paying to develop the same fit from scratch again.

  • It lets you split production. Growth often means one partner for cut-and-sew and another for a specialized treatment. You cannot do that if the pattern lives on someone else’s server.

  • It is brand value. When investors or an acquirer runs due diligence, they ask what IP you actually own. Patterns and tech packs you do not control make your brand worth less on paper.

“That’s just industry standard,” it isn’t

If a manufacturer tells you retaining the pattern is simply how things are done, know that this is a choice, not a law.

Plenty of manufacturers’ factory-direct ones, especially, transfer full ownership as part of a normal development agreement. When you outsource overseas, ownership matters even more, because IP enforcement across borders is harder and you want the question settled by contract, not by hope.

Three questions to ask before development starts

  • “Once development is paid for, do I own the pattern, tech pack, and production files? Yes or no?” A clear yes is the only good answer.

  • “What format will I receive them in?” You want a usable digital (CAD) file, not just a physical pattern you cannot hand to anyone else.

  • “Can I use these patterns with another manufacturer?” Some agreements transfer ownership on paper but quietly restrict use.

None of this is legal advice, and a real agreement should be read by someone qualified before you sign. But knowing the ownership line means you will notice when a quote is silent on it and silence is the thing to catch.

Chapter 6

How pattern quality shows up in fit

Here is the payoff, and the reason any of this matters to a brand owner.

You never see the pattern. Your customer never hears the word.

But the pattern is what they feel when they put the garment on, and a bad one shows up as the exact problems that drive returns.

What a bad pattern looks like on a body

  • Twisting side seams: the seam that should fall straight down the side spirals toward the front or back. Almost always a pattern or grain problem, not a sewing one.

  • A gaping or strangling neckline: necklines that stand away from the body or choke are a pattern-shape issue at the neck curve.

  • Sleeves that pull or hang wrong: Sleeve pitch, how the sleeve is set into the armhole on the pattern, decides whether arms move comfortably or the fabric drags.

  • Balance that’s off: the hem rides up at the front or back, or the garment leans. That is pattern balance, and no amount of good stitching fixes it.

  • A drop-shoulder that lands wrong across sizes: a signature streetwear detail that a weak grade can push out of place on the largest and smallest sizes.

You catch these at the sample, not in production

A fit sample is the pattern made real, on a body or form, where these faults are visible and cheap to fix.

Correct the pattern there, and every unit runs right. Miss it there, and you have paid to manufacture a return.

Chapter 7

When your factory patterns in-house

One structural thing changes all of the above: whether the pattern is made under the same roof that cuts, sews, and washes your garment or is handed between separate vendors.

It is worth understanding, because it quietly affects your speed, your fit, and your ownership.

  • Fewer handoffs, fewer errors: when the pattern room sits next to the sewing floor, a fit correction is a walk across the building, not an email chain and a re-sampling delay between two companies.

  • Faster iteration: The loop from sample to corrected pattern to the next sample tightens when one team owns the whole chain, which matters most on the Rung 2 and Rung 3 garments that need several rounds.

  • Cleaner ownership: one development agreement, one place your files live, and one clear answer to the ownership line instead of untangling who holds what across a pattern house, a sample room, and a factory.

  • The pattern and the production match: the people grading your pattern are the people cutting it, so the file reflects how it will actually be made.

Common questions

It depends on which rung of the cost ladder your garment sits on. Adapting an existing block is the cheapest and fastest; a partial development sits in the middle; a full from-scratch pattern for a complex garment costs the most. The real drivers are piece count, construction complexity, and how many correction rounds the fit needs not how simple the garment looks. 

Only if your agreement says so which is the whole point of the Ownership Line. Retaining ownership is not an industry rule; many factory-direct manufacturers transfer full ownership of the pattern, tech pack, and files once development is paid for. If you do not own them, switching factories can mean paying to develop your fit all over again. Get ownership, file format, and usage rights in writing before money moves.

It is the fixed amount that a specific measurement point changes between sizes, how much the chest, length, or sleeve grows from, say, M to L. Different points grow by different amounts because bodies do not scale up uniformly. A full set of grade rules turns your base size into a consistent size run.

Digital (CAD) is the practical default for anything you will grade, reorder, or move between factories it is exact, easy to edit, and portable. Paper still exists on the floor, but if you own your pattern, you want a usable digital file in hand, not only a physical copy that cannot travel.

Usually yes, if you own it and it is in a usable format. A good factory will check it, sample from it, and flag anything that will not run cleanly on their line before committing to production. This is exactly why owning your pattern in a portable file matters.

It varies by rung. A block adaptation may need one or two rounds; a from-scratch garment can take several. Tight specs and a clear tech pack up front are the biggest lever you have to keep that number down.
