The Three Ink Families: Plastisol vs Water-Based vs Discharge:
Almost every apparel screen print you have ever touched came from one of three ink families.
Learn what separates them, and you can walk into any decorator conversation and make the right call in about thirty seconds.
This is the decision at the center of the whole guide.
The Three Ink Families:
Plastisol sits on the fabric.
Water-based solutions soak into the fabric.
Discharge replaces the fabric’s own dye.
Feel, opacity, cost, and fabric limits all follow from that one difference where the color ends up relative to the fibers.
Family 1: Plastisol: the workhorse
Plastisol is a PVC-based ink that cures with heat and forms a distinct layer on the fabric.
It is the most widely used apparel ink in the world, and for good reasons: it is opaque enough to print bright colors on dark garments in one or two passes, it works on almost any fabric, it doesn’t dry in the screen (so it prints fast on long runs), and it is the most forgiving ink to run consistently.
The trade-off is hand-feel.
Because the ink sits on the surface, you can feel it: a plastisol print has a noticeable, slightly raised, less breathable layer where the graphic is.
On a big, solid front print, that’s a real consideration; on a small chest logo, most wearers never think about it.
Plastisol is also the only base that carries the specialty effects puff, high-density, metallic, and glow, so if your art needs dimension, you’re in this family by default.
Cure: Plastisol must reach a target temperature, typically in the 300-330°F (about 150–166°C) range, and only needs to hit that temperature briefly.
That makes it fast and relatively easy to cure correctly, which matters enormously for durability (Chapter 4).
Family 2: Water-based: the soft hand
Water-based ink uses water as its main carrier and penetrates the fabric fibers rather than sitting on top.
The result is the “soft hand” streetwear founders chase: a print you can barely feel, more breathable, and often preferred on premium blanks and fashion-forward pieces.
Because the color bonds into the cotton itself, a well-cured water-based print can last the life of the garment.
The trade-offs are real and worth understanding before you specify them.
Water-based ink is semi-transparent, so it shines on light-colored garments and struggles to show up boldly on dark ones without help.
It is harder to cure: the water has to evaporate, and the ink has to cross-link, so it needs the cure temperature reached and then held, often for a couple of minutes, with more drying capacity than plastisol.
It also prints more slowly and can dry on the screen mid-run if the shop isn’t set up for it.
Those constraints are why water-based tends to carry a per-color upcharge over standard plastisol.
Family 3: Discharge: color that becomes the shirt
Discharge is the clever one.
Instead of adding pigment on top of a dark garment, a chemical activator removes the garment’s own dye during curing and, in colored discharge, replaces it with new pigment in the same step.
Because the color is in the fiber rather than on it, discharge delivers the softest hand of the three: almost zero surface texture, as if the graphic were woven in.
That “worn-in,” broken-up look is a big reason premium streetwear keeps specifying it even as newer transfer methods eat into mid-volume printing.
Discharge has hard limits you must design around:
- Fabric: It works reliably only on 100% cotton that was dyed with dischargeable dyes. On blends and synthetics, results are unpredictable. Always test the specific blank.
- Color range: Because you’re bleaching and re-dyeing, some bright shades are hard to hit cleanly, and the base garment color affects the outcome.
- Chemistry and pot life: The common activator (zinc formaldehyde sulfoxylate, ZFS) releases trace formaldehyde gas during curing and needs proper ventilation; a newer thiourea dioxide system runs lower emissions. Once activated, activated activators lower emissions. As a short working life, often only six to eight hours, it cannot be stored between runs.
- Post-cure: Discharge garments should be washed before wear to clear residual chemistry.
A common hybrid worth knowing: printers use a discharge underbase on dark cotton, then lay plastisol colors on top.
You get bright, opaque color with a far softer hand than a plastisol white underbase would, giving the best of both families on the right fabric.

Which family should you print on?
Strip it to a few honest rules:
- Bold graphics, dark garments, mixed fabrics, best price, specialty effects → plastisol.
- Soft hand on light 100% cotton, eco-leaning brand story → water-based.
- Premium worn-in feel on dark 100% cotton; hand-feel is the selling point → discharge (or discharge underbase + plastisol).
There is no universally “best” ink; only the best ink for a specific garment, design, and volume.
The decorator who tells you plastisol is always the answer, or that water-based is always better, is telling you about their shop, not about your product.
A word on safety and compliance:
General information for founders, not legal advice: confirm your own obligations and keep supplier documentation.
Two compliance points matter for a brand, especially if anything you sell could be worn by children (age 12 and under), which in the U.S. can include adult sizes that are marketed to or clearly intended for kids:
- Phthalates and lead (CPSIA). Older plastisol once contained phthalate plasticizers, now restricted in children’s products under the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act. Modern plastisol from major manufacturers is phthalate-free, and this is now the industry standard, but for children’s products you should confirm your printer uses certified phthalate-free ink and obtain documentation. Because cured ink fuses to the fabric and can’t be scraped off, regulators treat the whole garment (fabric plus print) as a single item that must meet the lead limit, and the maker of the final product, not the ink supplier, is responsible for the children’s product certificate. - Discharge and children’s apparel. Because ZFS discharge releases formaldehyde during curing, discharge prints are generally not CPSIA-certified for children’s apparel. For kids’ products, lean on phthalate-free plastisol or water-based with documentation.
If you sell into California, be aware of Proposition 65 warning requirements as well.
None of this should scare you off screen printing; it is the most regulated and best-documented decoration method there.
“Screen” just means ask for the paperwork and keep it.
