Most streetwear startups arrive at decoration the same way: they have a logo, a garment they like, and no idea whether that logo should be screen-printed, embroidered, stitched onto a woven patch, or dyed into the cloth.

So they take whatever their supplier defaults to, and six months later they are quietly unhappy that the print cracked.

The embroidery puckered on a lightweight tee, or the “vintage” wash came back in three different shades across the run.

The problem is rarely the method. It is the match.

Every decoration technique is excellent at some jobs and quietly terrible at others. 

the difference between a garment that looks like a real brand and one that looks like a blank with a sticker on it usually comes down to picking the right method for the fabric, the artwork, the quantity, and how hard the piece will be worn.

This guide maps the full menu, then turns it into decisions.

We run these methods every day, so the trade-offs here are the ones we watch on the floor, not a spec sheet.

By the end, you will be able to look at a garment and its artwork and name the method it wants and know roughly what it will cost and how long it will take.

Chapter 01:

The full menu, mapped:

There are dozens of decoration techniques, but they only mark a garment in four ways.

Sort every method into the four marks: surface, fabric, cloth, and attached, and the whole menu becomes something you can hold in your head.

The Four Marks:

A method either sits on the surface (print), soaks into the fiber (dye), passes through the cloth (stitch), or arrives as a separate attached piece (patch).

“Specialty” finishes reflective, glow, high-density, and foil are not a fifth family; they’re variations layered onto these four. Keep that frame, and nothing on the menu is a mystery.

Mark 1: Print (on the surface)

Printing lays color onto the face of the cloth.

It is the biggest family and where most founders start, because it handles logos, graphics, and photographic art.

The five methods below cover almost every print job in streetwear.

Screen print:

Screen printing:

Ink pushed through a mesh stencil, one screen per color.

The workhorse for volume: the more units, the lower the cost per piece.

Priced per color, so a two-color logo is cheap and a twelve-color photo is not.

Two ink chemistries matter (Chapter 3 goes deeper): plastisol sits on top, bold and opaque, and is very durable; water-based soaks in for a soft, worn-in hand.

DTG:

Direct-to-garment:

An inkjet printer lays water-based ink straight into the fabric.

No screens, no setup, unlimited colors, so photographic and full-color art costs the same as one color.

Softest hand of the print family and best on 100% cotton.

Weaker on polyester, needs pre-treatment on darks, and is the least wash-durable of the surface methods.

DTF:

Direct-to-film:

The design is printed on a film, powdered with adhesive, and then heat-pressed onto the garment.

No per-color setup, and it bonds to almost anything: cotton, poly, blends, nylon, and fleece.

The most versatile print method for small, colorful, mixed-fabric runs.

A large solid block can feel slightly plastic and won’t breathe, so designers break it up with halftones.

Sublimation:

Dye sublimation:

Ink turns to gas under heat and bonds into polyester fabric.

The result has zero hand-feel and outlasts the garment because there is no surface layer to crack or peel.

The catch: it needs a fabric that is at least ~65% polyester and works only on white or light garments.

Ideal for all-over prints and technical/athletic pieces.

Vinyl / HTV:

Heat-transfer vinyl:

Colored vinyl is cut to shape and pressed on.

The go-to for names and numbers and one-off personalization because each piece is handled individually with no setup.

Great for solid shapes and text; not for gradients or fine detail.

Sits on the surface with a visible edge.

Specialty print:

Foil, puff & high-density:

Layered onto screen or transfer work: puff ink rises for a raised, rubbery texture; high-density builds a sharp 3D edge; foil adds metallic shine; reflective and glow add function.

These read as premium when used sparingly and cheap when overused.

Each adds cost and a screen or pass.

Mark 2: Dye (into the fiber)

Dye colors the garment itself rather than adding a mark to it.

In streetwear, this is less about branding a logo and more about the base look of the piece: the rich, soft, lived-in color that makes a blank feel like a product.

It is also where most first-timers get burned on consistency, so it’s worth understanding the difference between the two main routes.

Into the fabric:

Garment dyeing:

The finished, cut-and-sewn garment is dyed in a bath so color is absorbed all the way through.

Gives a deep, even, rich tone; softens knits; and delivers a broken-in feel straight off the line.

Reactive dye on cotton bonds chemically for strong colorfastness.

Costs more than piece-dyeing and can bleed on the first wash, so a first-wash instruction matters.

On the surface:

Pigment dyeing & washes:

Pigment sits on the surface with a binder, then fades and rubs back with wear, which is the point: it produces the vintage, washed-out streetwear look.

Add-on washes (acid, stone, enzyme, mineral, and tie-dye) push texture and fade further.

The trade-off is variance: pigment and washes give highs and lows across a run.

Set that expectation before you order.

Garment dye is for depth and softness.
 
Pigment and washes are for the faded, worn-in look, and they come with the batch variance you plan for, not the variance you complain about later.
 

Because dye and wash happen to the whole garment, they interact with everything else: fabric choice, shrinkage, and how any print or embroidery survives the wash.

Mark 3: Stitch (through the cloth)

Embroidery marks a garment with thread instead of ink.

It reads as more permanent and more premium than most printing; the reason polos, caps, and outerwear default to it is that it survives washing better than almost anything on the surface.

The cost model is different, though: you pay a one-time digitizing fee to turn art into a stitch file, then a per-piece cost driven by stitch count.

Standard:

Flat embroidery:

The thread is stitched flat to the fabric.

The default for left-chest logos, caps, and outerwear.

Durable, dimensional, premium.

Struggles with fine detail, small text, gradients, and very lightweight knits (where dense stitching puckers).

Raised:

3D puff:

Foam laid under a dense satin stitch raises the design off the cap or jacket.

Bold and tactile, the classic snapback logo.

Best for chunky letters and simple shapes, not details.

Fabric + stitch:

Appliqué:

A piece of fabric is stitched down and framed with embroidery.

Covers large areas without a huge stitch count, so big collegiate-style letters stay affordable.

Adds a fabric-contrast look.

Pile:

Chenille:

A different machine system entirely, laying a raised looped/chain pile of the fuzzy varsity-jacket letter.

High perceived value, specialist setup, and best on heavyweight pieces.

Mark 4: Attach (a separate piece)

A patch is a decoration made on the garment and added on.

Because it’s produced separately, it can carry detail, texture, and a finished edge that on-garment methods can’t.

it moves the branding from “a mark on a blank” to “a made object,” which is why patches read as considered.

Patch types:

What the patch is made of:

  • Woven fine thread, woven flat; holds small text and sharp detail.

  • Embroidered classic stitched patch with a bordered edge and dimension.

  • PVC/rubber molded, weatherproof, bold; a technical/outdoor look.

  • Leather / faux-leather debossed or printed; the heritage headwear label.

Attachment:

How it’s fixed on:

  • Sew-on is most durable; it survives heavy wash and wear.

  • Heat-seal / iron-on: fast and clean, weaker over time and washing.

  • Hook-and-loop removable/swappable for tactical and modular pieces.

  • Rivet/button for leather labels on caps and heavyweight denim.

Patches and labels overlap: a woven brand tab at the hem or a leather cap label is doing patchwork and label work at once.

Chapter 02:

Look, durability, cost & best use:

The menu tells you what exists.

This tells you what each method actually costs you in hand-feel, in wash life, in setup fees, and in minimums.

Read the matrix as your first filter, then use the notes under it to protect your margin.

Garment/pigment dye Deep & soft (garment) / faded (pigment). Garment: strong. Pigment: fades by design. Bath/lot minimums; variance to plan for. Base color, vintage streetwear look.

The two numbers that decide print cost:

Every print quote comes down to how many colors and how many units.

Screen printing charges a setup per color but drives the per-unit cost down as quantity climbs; digital (DTG/DTF) charges no setup and stays flat.

So there’s a crossover point where screens become cheaper.

One widely cited break-even analysis puts it near 500 shirts for a single-color design and around 838 for a four-color job.

Below that, digital usually wins; above it, screen pulls ahead.

Your real crossover depends on your quote, but the shape always holds.

Embroidery’s hidden line item: digitizing”

Embroidery has a cost founders forget: digitizing, the one-time job of converting your artwork into a machine-stitch file.

It’s priced by complexity; a simple logo is inexpensive, while 3D puff, appliqué, and chenille are billed as specialty work because they’re genuinely different to program.

Pay for good digitizing once, and it stitches clean on every unit forever; cheap auto-digitizing shows up as thread breaks and puckering on the floor.

Minimums, lead times, and per-unit economics all feed your unit cost and cash-flow plan.

Chapter 03:

Matching method to fabric and artwork:

This is where most decoration goes wrong: not a bad method, but a method fighting the fabric or the artwork.

Two quick checks catch almost every mismatch before it reaches the press.

Check 1: What does the fabric allow?

The fiber decides which methods are even on the table:

Cotton:

100% cotton & cotton-rich:

The friendliest base. Takes screen (plastisol or water-based), DTG, and DTF well.

Water-based and discharge inks sit best on reactive-dyed cotton.

Sublimation does not work.

Polyester:

Polyester & performance:

Sublimation shines here and only here (needs ~65%+ poly, light colors).

DTG is weak on poly; DTF and screen, with the right ink, handle it.

Watch for dye migration on hot presses.

Blends:

Blends, fleece, technical:

DTF is the versatile player; it bonds across cotton, poly, nylon, and fleece.

The screen works with the correct ink system.

Match the press temp to the fabric to avoid scorching.

Knits & wovens:

Structure for embroidery:

Embroidery loves stable wovens and heavyweight knits (caps, polos, fleece).

On lightweight single-jersey tees, dense stitching puckers use a backing, a lighter stitch count, or a print instead.

Fabric weight, knit, and finish all change how a method behaves, which is why the decoration call and the fabric call belong in the same conversation.

Check 2: What does the artwork need?

Now match the art to a method:

  • Gradients, photos, and many colors → digital (DTG on cotton, DTF anywhere) or sublimation on poly. Screen printing punishes color count.

  • One to four solid colors, at volume → screen printing, every time the lowest cost per unit and the most durable bond.

  • A logo that must read “premium” and survive wash → embroidery or a woven patch, not print.

  • Fine text or tiny detail → woven patch or DTG/DTF; avoid standard embroidery and puff, which can’t hold small detail.

  • A worn-in, faded aesthetic → water-based/discharge ink or pigment dye and washes lean into the fade rather than fighting it.
If you find yourself choosing a method and then wishing the fabric or artwork were different, you’ve picked the wrong method.

Chapter 04:

Combining methods on one garment:

The pieces that look most like “a brand” rarely use one method.

An embroidered chest logo over a garment-dyed body, a woven hem tab on a screen-printed tee, and a puff cap with a leather patch.

Combining is where decoration gets interesting and where sequencing and cost stacking will bite you if you’re not deliberate.

Combinations that work:

Contrast of texture:

Embroidery + print:

A stitched logo against a printed graphic reads premium because the two marks feel different under the hand.

Keep them in separate zones (chest embroidery and back print), so neither fights the other.

Base + mark:

Dye/wash + print or stitch:

A garment-dyed or washed body gives depth; a single clean mark on top reads considered.

Water-based ink over a dyed base keeps the whole piece soft and tonal.

Object + garment:

Patch + print:

A woven or leather patch as the hero, with a small printed detail elsewhere, moves a blank firmly into product territory the standard headwear and heavyweight formula.

Layered surface:

Specialty over base print:

Foil, puff, or high-density on top of a flat screen base adds a focal moment.

Use it once per garment; two specialty effects usually cancel each other out.

The three things that go wrong:

Sequence. Order of operations matters.

Dye and wash come before most decoration, or a wash will attack a fresh print and pull an embroidery’s registration.

A decoration that has to survive a garment wash needs to be chosen for this, as this is a wash-test question, and it connects straight to fabric & print wash testing.

Registration and placement. Two methods in the same zone must line up.

A print that has to sit exactly around an embroidered element is a precision job.

Give the factory a placement map with real measurements, not “center chest.”

Cost stacking. Each method carries its own setup and minimum.

Two methods can mean two setups, two lead times, and two MOQs stacked on one garment, which is fine if you planned for it and painful if you didn’t.

Every combination lives or dies in the spec.

A note on inks and compliance. Decoration chemistry is a product-safety matter as well as an aesthetic one.

Modern plastisol from major manufacturers is phthalate-free, and water-based inks can carry OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT and GOTS certification for organic supply chains.

If you sell into regulated or children’s markets, the relevant frameworks include the U.S. CPSIA phthalate limits and the EU’s REACH restrictions.

The Five-Question Filter:

A method-selection quick reference.

Run any job through these five questions in order, and the right method or a short list of two falls out.

It’s the same sequence we use to route a job on the floor.

01. What’s the fabric?

This eliminates options first.

Poly → sublimation is in; DTG is out.

Cotton → screen, DTG, water-based all in.

Blends/technical → DTF or screen.

Lightweight knit → be careful with dense embroidery.


02. How many colors and how much detail?

Few solid colors → screen.

Gradients, photos, many colors → DTG/DTF or sublimation.

Fine text or tiny detail → woven patch or digital, not standard embroidery.


03. How many units?

Small run → digital (no setup).

Hundreds and up → screen or dye becomes cheaper per piece.

04. What hand feel do you want?

No-feel → water-based, DTG, sublimation, or dye.

Bold and raised → plastisol, puff, 3D embroidery, or a patch.

The hand feel is a brand decision as much as a technical one.


05. How hard will it be worn and washed?

Heavy wash life → screen, sublimation, embroidery, sew-on patch, DTF.

Vintage-fade is fine or wanted → pigment dye, washes, water-based.

Match durability to how the customer actually treats the piece.

Answer those five, and you have your method.

When two survive the filter, let the tie-breaker be whichever protects your margin at your quantity, usually the one with the cost shape that fits your run size.

Decoration questions founders ask

On polyester, sublimation is the most durable of all; the dye becomes part of the fabric, so it can’t crack, peel, or fade and effectively outlasts the garment.

On cotton, well-cured screen printing lasts hundreds of washes, and embroidery and a sew-on patch are extremely hard-wearing.

DTF holds up well (roughly 50+ washes when pressed correctly).

DTG is the least durable of the common methods and fades the soonest.

Digital methods like DTG on cotton or DTF on mixed fabrics because they carry no per-color setup.

Screen printing gets cheaper per unit as quantity climbs but is expensive on small orders because the setup cost isn’t spread over enough pieces.

As a rough rule, screen tends to overtake digital on cost somewhere in the hundreds of units, depending on color count.

Yes, but choose the method for it.

Sublimation is made for polyester (it needs about 65% poly or more on light colors).

DTG struggles on poly.

DTF and screen printing with the correct ink system both handle polyester and blends well, with DTF being the most flexible across mixed fabrics.

Plastisol sits on the surface: bold, opaque, very durable, and easy on dark garments, but with a heavier hand.

Water-based soaks in for a soft, breathable, worn-in finish and can carry organic certifications, but it prints at lower opacity on darks (often needing a discharge underbase) and is fussier on press.

Pick plastisol for bold, opaque graphics and durability; pick water-based for a soft, vintage, premium-retail feel.

For a small logo on a cap, polo, or piece of outerwear, usually yes, it reads as more premium and survives washing better.

But embroidery can’t hold fine detail, small text, or gradients; it can pucker lightweight knits; and it carries a one-time digitizing fee plus a per-unit cost that rises with stitch count.

For detailed or full-color art, or on thin tees, printing is the better call.

Yes, and the best-looking pieces often do.

The rules: get the sequence right (dye and wash before decoration), keep methods in separate zones or map placement precisely where they meet, and budget for stacked setups, lead times, and minimums.

Combining is a planning decision more than a technical limit.
